Water salinity
The salt concentration of water is measured in parts per thousand (PPK) with distilled water having a 0 PPK. Water and soil salinity are measured by passing an electric current between the two electrodes of a salinity
meter in a sample of water. High salinity levels increase the ability to conduct an electrical current, therefore a high electrical current value indicates that there is a high level of sodium chloride present in the water sample.
Materials:
- Water sample
- Salinity meter
Method:
1. Collect a sample of water from the desired location
2. Place the salinity meter in the water sample.
3. Read the electrical current value represented on the salinity meter.
Note: An average salinity water level is between 15 and 35 PPK
The PPK that was indicated during this field study was 21.3 PPK and was consequently in the average salinity level range.
